On Thursday 21st August around 30 marchers arrived in Harrogate as part of the People’s March for the NHS.

The march is following the 300 mile route of the historic Jarrow Crusade from Jarrow to Westminster. The marchers, led by a group of Darlington mothers, are protesting against the privatisation of the NHS and the dismantling of our health service through cuts.

A reception for the marchers was held at St. Peter’s Church in Harrogate town centre. Speakers included Lindis Percy, who worked in the NHS for 36 years and is the co-founder and co-ordinator of the Campaign for the Accountability of American Bases (http://www.caab.org.uk/). Dr. Richard Turner, former director of public health in South Leeds, spoke about the need for a publicly owned and publicly funded health service.

Trish, one of the marchers who is doing the entire 300 mile route, spoke from the heart about how much the NHS means to her. The NHS has kept her and her family alive and she wanted to say “a big thank you to the welfare state.” Trish stated that “we can afford the NHS, but this information is being kept from us and our welfare state is being dismantled by the government before our eyes. Why are we putting up with this? Don’t let them get away with it!”
