Britain is set to attack Iraq for the third time in less than 25 years, following a vote by MPs on Friday. Shamefully, the vast majority of Labour MPs voted with the Tories for yet another war in the Middle-East.
Harrogate weekly vigil against the war
Anti-war activists have organised a weekly vigil in Harrogate to protest against imperialist intervention in Iraq and Syria. The vigils will take place every Thursday from 5.30 to 6.30 pm at the Cenotaph in the town centre.
The next vigil is this coming Thursday, 2nd October. All welcome! Please bring a sign/poster or something to say why you are protesting.
Not in our name!
The air strikes are only the beginning of an attempt by Western imperialism to re-assert its hegemony in the region. Obama has stated that the war could “last for years.” Cameron even asserted at Friday’s debate in Parliament that he could legally order action against Syria without a new vote.
Islamic State (IS), formerly known as ISIS, is a product of the sectarian regime created by Western imperialism after the occupation of Iraq. Over a decade of war and occupation in Iraq and Afghanistan has only led to more violence, instability and sectarianism. A new war could potentially even see the growth of IS, enabling them to pose as an anti-imperialist force in the region.
We need to oppose this war and challenge the lies of the warmongers of all parties. We will be posting details of further anti-war activities in Harrogate over the next few weeks, so please keep checking this website for information.
