Our first branch meeting of the New Year will be discussing the Trade Unionist & Socialist Coalition (TUSC) and the May elections in Harrogate in 2015.
The meeting will take place on Tuesday 13th January, starting 7.30pm. The venue is the Stone Beck pub, Jenny Field Drive, Harrogate, HG3 2XQ.
TUSC was set up in 2010, co-founded by the late Bob Crow, former general secretary of the RMT transport workers’ union. Its purpose is to provide a common platform for socialists, trade unionists and community campaigners to challenge the pro-austerity policies of all the establishment parties at the ballot box.
TUSC stood 560 candidates in the 2014 local elections, the biggest left-of-Labour working-class electoral challenge since the end of world war two. Paul Viney, TUSC candidate for the High Harrogate ward, won 66 votes (4.5%) on an openly socialist, anti-cuts platform.
In May 2015 TUSC are aiming to stand candidates in at least 1000 council wards and 100 parliamentary constituencies. At our meeting we will be discussing the TUSC election campaign, both nationally and in Harrogate and Knaresborough. All welcome!
