Candidates for the Harrogate Borough Council elections on Thursday 7th May were asked to submit a 150-word statement on themselves and their policies for inclusion in the Harrogate Advertiser.

Paul Viney’s statement was included in this week’s edition of the paper and can be read below.

Paul Viney – Trade Unionist & Socialist Coalition (TUSC)

I am a retired carpenter and trade union shop steward and have lived in Harrogate for 36 years.

Almost 2000 people are on Harrogate’s council house waiting list and the average house price is 12.5 times higher than the average income. I am campaigning to end Harrogate’s housing crisis by:

  • Building council housing & stopping council house sell-offs
  • Establishing a local rent council to determine fair rents and a rent cap
  • Setting up a council-run not-for-profit letting agency

All the other parties are committed to further austerity. I believe that councillors should refuse to implement the cuts and set an alternative “people’s budget” which meets Harrogate’s needs. Reserves and affordable borrowing should be used to defend local services, while demanding any shortfall back from government.

I support a living wage of £10 an hour and a ban on zero hour contracts for all council workers and contractors.
