Harrogate Socialists were campaigning on behalf of the Trade Unionist & Socialist Coalition (TUSC) today. An anti-cuts stall was held in Knaresborough and leafleting sessions were also organised in the High Harrogate ward, where Paul Viney is standing as the local TUSC candidate.
No cuts for Knaresborough – Defend our local services!
North Yorkshire County Council are planning severe cuts to library services in Knaresborough. The plans involve reducing the number of paid staff at Knaresborough Library from seven to one and introducing a “hybrid” model, with a combination of professional staff and volunteers.
The county council’s overall spending is being cut by £167 million, with library services required to make a further £1.6 million in “savings”. However, TUSC argues that councils do have a choice and do not have to pass on central government cuts to the local community.
Councils can refuse to implement the cuts, using their reserves and prudential borrowing powers in the first instance. Councils can set a budget which meets the needs of the community, mobilising a mass campaign to demand that central government meets any shortfall in funding. There are also legal powers available to councils to oppose the transfer of public services to private bodies. This includes powers to initiate referenda and organise public commissions and consultations in defence of local services.
Harrogate Socialists organised a petition in defence of public services in Knaresborough and against the council cuts. The petition contained the following demands:
- Support Knaresborough Library – oppose all cuts to council jobs and services
- End Knaresborough’s housing crisis – build high-standard, affordable council housing
- Reject increases in council tax and rent to compensate for government cuts
- Oppose the privatisation of council jobs and services
Vote Paul Viney – The socialist candidate for High Harrogate!

Paul Viney is standing as the TUSC candidate for the High Harrogate ward in the Borough Council elections in May. Harrogate Socialists have been campaigning in the ward and over 1500 leaflets introducing TUSC policies have already been distributed.
TUSC candidates are committed to building an electoral alternative to austerity and oppose all cuts to council jobs, services, pay and conditions. Further leafleting sessions and campaigning activities are planned in High Harrogate during the election campaign.
